Teaching Unreal Engine & working with others

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

Bite Me. A new indie Horror game by Aaron Wise and Abbey Smith.

I have always been the kind of person who likes to give back to people, and when Abbey approached me about teaching her Unreal Engine I was a little unsure at first because of how many things I am working on at this point in time. I have been teaching Unreal Engine since early December and Abbey (although oceans apart) has been a very quick learner. Abbey Smith is one of my colleagues at Vidas Games Studio and has wanted to work on solo games for a couple of years now. Abbey currently studies at the ALU Online University where she is learning computing. As part of that course, Abbey has had to learn animation, Maya, 3D modelling as well as sound design. This has transitioned into her love for wanting to make video games.

So, I agreed and Abbey has done well to pick it up so quickly. Our first collaboration project "Bite Me" which is set in the 1950's in a diner after closing time and something isn't quite right. The game will feature a lot of sarcasm, but also genuine spooks and I was really excited to see this teaching side of me pay off. On top of this, as soon as the game was announced, Dread Central picked it up and have already completed an article on the game which is found here.

Models are mainly done by myself since I am a lot quicker at this and Abbey can do them already so her focus has mainly been on engine work.

As you can see from this screenshot we are really aiming to get that 1950's style as accurate as possible. The biggest challenge right now is for Abbey to find time to do this between her studies and her job and also the studio games we are currently working on. I think this one will be a bit of a wait, but in the long run. It will be worth it.

Unreal Engine The main teaching point so far has been about Blueprints and how to do certain functions in engine. For example, Abbey will say what she wants to do and then I will show her how to go about doing that. Triggers, sequences, how to pick up items and how to interact with the world. We are planning on covering blend spaces at some point in the next few weeks, but since Abbey is still in the beginning phases of this development process and we are at opposite ends of the world, this will take a bit of time to complete.
