"Game development has a cost. For a small project, that cost may be just your time, but on larger projects the costs could be significant, and would likely require outside investment of some kind." This week we were asked to share & discuss post-mortems of games where info was available. Specifically around the games budget and costs.
Fall Guys: Fall guys was created and released in 2020 by Mediatonic. Now at first glance they may not seems like an indie studio as Mediatonic is a big company, but for making games it is quite small. In 2016 they even went into financial difficulty and all 4 of their games they were working on for other companies had to be cancelled and then rethink their future. Between 2016 and the start of Fall Guys in 2019, nothing was produced to save money from the umbrella side of the company. Fall Guys Started Development in December 2019 and was released 9 months later in August 2020 during a rather difficult time in the pandemic. The company didn't expect it to be a big hit but to their surprise 1 month later in September, the game had been downmloaded from Steam alone more than 7 million times at £15.99 a go in the UK, and $19.99 a go in the US. The company initially didn't want to release it after such a short development but ultimately decided it was the right thing to do. Fast forward a couple more months later to Christmas 2020 where the game celebrated it's 1st year, the game had sold just over 11 million copies going on to make £175 million and $245 million respectively. The budget for Fall Guys was $3 million with a team of 30 people working to ensure it was of high quality.
